A brief analysis of the current situation and prospect of waste glass recycling industry in China

If our city has a "mine" of recyclables, waste glass is the most urgently needed mineral in the mine.

Waste glass is one of the most difficult components to deal with in urban garbage. They are also expensive to transport and burn, and cannot be degraded in landfills. Some of them even contain heavy metals such as zinc and copper, which can contaminate soil and groundwater if discarded carelessly. The profit margin of recycling waste glass is meager, compared with other recyclables like "chicken ribs".

The economics of recycling

In China, the amount of waste glass is considerable, about 50 million tons of waste glass will be produced every year.Through the recycling and utilization of waste glass, there are not only economic benefits, but also significant environmental benefits.

According to statistics, the use of recycled glass recycled glass, can save coal, electricity energy 10-30%, reduce air pollution 20%, reduce the mining waste exhaust 80%.

Calculated by a ton, the recovery of a ton of waste glass can save 720 kg quartz sand, less soda ash 250 kg, save feldspar 60 kg, save 10 tons of coal, electricity 400 degrees.

A ton of waste glass back to the furnace can be recycled 20 thousand 500 grams of bottles, than with new raw materials production cost savings of 20%.

Recycling started late and the technology is relatively backward.

In the recycling of waste glass, Chinese glass industry starts later than developed countries.

In addition to the traditional manual sorting, there are also automatic sorting and separation technologies, which ensure that the quality of glass products will not be affected after the waste glass is mixed in. At present, there was no specialized waste glass treatment factory in China, and the sorting and color separation of waste glass were mainly manual, with high processing cost. Already, a number of manufacturers are producing glass beads, glass mosaics, colored glass balls, glass blocks, and artificial glass marbles from recycled broken glass. Research institutions are also conducting in deep research.

The supply exceeds the expectation, the recovery enterprise loses heavily.

Due to the large volume of glass products, not easy to store, heavy weight, high transportation cost, the trouble of damage, low recovery profit, high rent of recovery site, expensive labor, high taxes and fees, and lack of policy support, recycling enterprises are often in a state of loss.

To recycle a ton of glass, it may cost around RMB 100.

Hence enterprise lacks enthusiasm. On the other hand, glass products manufacturers have their own assembly line, production costs are low, prefer to use raw materials directly processing.

The overall recovery rate is low and the industry potential is great.

The recycling industry of waste materials in China develops rapidly and the recycling and processing system of renewable resources has been basically formed. However, a small part of the waste glass produced in life has been recycled in various ways to waste collection stations, and most of the rest is landfill treatment by the sanitation department. So far, the recycling of waste glass has not really realized industrialization.

At present, the average recycling rate of waste glass in the world is close to 50%, 84% in Taiwan, 97% in Germany, and only 13% in China, far below the world average of 50%.

China's waste glass industry has a huge market space.
